The Chinese Hua Mei is a tiny bird with a beautiful song. Its eyes are ringed by distinctive markings of violet and white lines that cause it to appear as if the bird were a stage performer, a diva in full make-up. The name Hua Mei means painted brow, or eyebrow, which refers to these dramatic marks.

Hua Mei birds have been kept as caged pets since the Ming dynasty, and the practice of keeping them as caged song-birds continues today.
